Lomonosov has greatly contributed to the development
of advanced philosophical conceptions. Advocates of idealism
and theology are even today trying to destroy the materialist
essence of his world outlook and give it an entirely
religious interpretation.
Soviet philosophers have shown that Lomonosov was one
ol" Hie most outstanding proponents of materialism in the
18lh century. They consider him to be the founder of the
trend in Russian materialist philosophy which was indissolubly
bound up with natural science. Ilis brilliant attempt
to formulate a unified materialist system of the nature of
things was the first ever to be made in Russia. Soviet scientists
have written many works treating of his philosophical
concepts and principles. But not all aspects of his philosophy
have been expounded with the fullness they deserve.
Ilis sociology, for example, has not been adequately studied.
A more thorough investigation should be made of such
philosophical problems as his concept of matter and its
properties, the process of cognition, the elements of dialectics
in his works. It is also to be regretted that his ethical
views have not as yet been studied or scientifically appraised.
And yet it was precisely these views that were
most distorted by the apologists of idealism and religion.
The primary purpose of this book is to shed light on
these problems and thus enlarge our understanding of the
philosophy of this great Russian scientist.
